Cottage · opening October 2026

Under construction. Literally. The Writers Cottage is being built into the slope above the Main House — a single quiet room for one or two, with a desk against the glass, a wall of books, a small fireplace, a bed, and the mountain through every window. Available from October 2026. These are the architect's renders; in October they become photos.

View from up the slope: stone retaining wall, cantilevered timber roof on posts, dramatic peak in the misty distance

Set into the slope

Like the Main House, the Writers Cottage is built into the mountain rather than onto it. A stone retaining wall holds the lower edge; the timber structure sits above, cantilevered toward the valley. The stone is quarried locally; the timber is the same moon-phase-harvested pine as the Main House.

The desk with white Eames-style chair facing an open book and coffee cup; Eames lounge and ottoman; built-in bookshelves; floor-to-ceiling angled glass wall to fynbos

The desk

The reason for the cottage. A wood desk faces the fynbos through an angled wall of glass. An Eames lounge waits a few steps away for the parts of writing that aren't writing. A wall of books to the side. A small fireplace through the door.

Built-in bookshelves backed by exposed sand-stone wall, lit from below; small fireplace; wood floors; reading lounges to the right

The library

A wall of bookshelves built into the back of the cottage, set against an exposed stone wall lit from above. The fireplace is at the heart. A lounge runs along the right; the bed is just out of frame.

Bedroom with bed, Matisse Blue Nude print on the slatted wood wall, large window to misty greenery, built-in bookshelves to the right

The bedroom

Quiet, dark wood, a Matisse on the wall, mountain through the glass. The bedroom is small on purpose — the writers' room is the room you spend time in. The bedroom is for sleeping.

Two leather chaise longues facing a wood-clad wall with fireplace; kitchenette behind; large glass sliding door to fynbos on the right

The lounge

A pair of chaises by the fire. A kitchenette behind. A wall of glass to the trees on the right. The cottage is designed so a guest could spend a full day inside it without feeling closed in — and a full day outside it without missing it.

Writers Cottage at night: warm interior glow through the glass facade, soft uplight on a tree, the mountain rising in the deep-blue twilight

After dark

The cottage is built around an open-air entrance. At night the warm light from inside spills through the timber and glass and onto the path. The mountain is still there, just darker.

The grounds

On the upper part of the property's slope, set apart from the Main House. Direct access to the trail up to the gazebo and the Skoorsteenberg peaks. Shared with the rest of the estate: the lap pool, the herb garden, the wood-fired sauna (when complete).
